“On this earth most of us have felt the deep ache of loss, the numbing burden of sorrow, and the pain of our heart breaking. Nobody wants to experience loss, but it is inevitable. As the Buddha taught, we are each given ten thousand joys and ten thousand sorrows. The challenge lies in not getting mired in either the joy or the emotional pain, keeping our hearts open and soft instead of closed and constricted.”
~ Deepak Chopra ~
A funny (not so funny) thing happened when a friend and I were enjoying a lovely, lazy afternoon of manicures and pedicures. My friend, a breast cancer survivor and spokesperson for breast cancer awareness, opted to receive a chair massage during her mani and shared with the technician that she was a survivor who’d recently survived a year of treatment and recovery.
The technician offered some unsolicited advice about the potential metaphysical origins of breast cancer that piqued my curiosity about to what she might be referring. As fate would have it (and there are no accidents in this serendipitous life), I was informed during my own Reiki session today that my Heart Chakra was blocked.
The energy healer used acupuncture, acupressure and Reiki to complete my body work and to re-engage the flow of energy in my body. I didn’t experience some major awakening or enlightenment but I did get the distinct sense that I was energized and open. In fact, after pressure to my “Crown Chakra” (the head) my sinuses drained and I began to weep for no apparent reason (yes, TMI, I know). She explained I was releasing blocked energy and clearing and this was essential for my emotional well being and healing. The results in my own experience prompted me to inquire further; specifically I became very curious about the heart chakra and what it means to have a blockage of energy in that area.
First, the word chakra is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning wheel. The Heart Chakra is believed to be one of seven energy points in the body. [More information on the seven chakras]. Most sources on this topic agree that:
“[a]n unhealthy heart chakra can exhibit many signs and symptoms; including but not limited to being defensive, critical, controlling, suspicious, withdrawn, possessive and afraid of letting go. When in balance an open heart chakra displays acceptance in others, life and yourself.” Source: MindBodyGreen.com
After reading this, I had to admit some of those things applied to me particularly at the moment I began my session. Defensive and unnecessarily critical? Check. Withdrawn and afraid of letting go? I recognize these things in myself too. That coupled with low energy as a result of being a little under the weather and physically exhausted and no wonder the healer went straight to my heart. Evidently, so does my pain!
But a balanced Heart Chakra allows forgiveness, unconditional love, letting go, trust, compassion. These are definitely what the world outside needs more of, and what my world inside needs more of too.
If you sense your heart might be closed, I’ve provided a link to 8 easy steps you can take to open so energy flows freely.
If you have any resources or information about Chakras, especially the Heart Chakra, please share them in the comments section. Here’s some additional wisdom about the Heart Chakra I want to share.
