“Wisdom reflects a capacity for sound judgment, discernment, and the objectivity to see what is needed in the moment. Collective wisdom reflects a similar capacity to learn together and evolve toward something greater and wiser than what we can do as individuals alone. This book emerges from a deep conviction that we have a stake in each other and that what binds us together is greater than what drives us apart.”

~ The Power of Collective Wisdom: And the Trap of Collective Folly ~

November 7, 2012

Greetings!

How fitting it is that on the day after the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was re-elected for another term, I send my 44th message in my quest to reflect and share during my 100 days of wisdom! I’m taking a few liberties as I am a few days behind in scheduling and #44 was “technically” planned for November 2nd. But who’s counting (other than me, of course).

Although I usually focus on the wisdom we can receive from Spirit within, today I focus on the wisdom of collective action; when people gather and share a common intention and action for a common good. When a group, however similar or diverse, puts the good of their community above their individual pursuits. When individuals come together to share their time, talents and treasures for a common purpose and benefit by harnessing the strength and wisdom found only in collective action.

Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable.

~Kenyan Proverb~

President Obama understands all too well the power and wisdom of collective action. Early in his young adulthood he worked tirelessly in Chicago as a community organizer. He worked for three years as director of the Developing Communities Project (DCP), a church-based community organization on Chicago’s far South Side. The work was difficult and the issues facing a marginalized community were challenging to say the least. With his energy, talents and intellect he could have chosen any easier road to professional accomplishment and certainly could have made more money.

But he knew that we are only as strong as our weakest link. He knew that humankind is not successful unless and until we all have the same opportunities to succeed. I imagine he understood, as A Course in Miracles teaches about miracles as a loving exchange of healing:

“miracles are healing because they supply a lack; they are performed by those who temporarily have more for those who temporarily have less. Miracles are a kind of exchange.”

This topic also brings to mind Deepak Chopra’s 21-Day Meditation Challenge. The idea of millions joining together in concerted spiritual intention and action to get present, grounded and focused on creating and sharing abundance has the ability to change the collective spirit and future of the world.

The same is true of the leadership of Oprah Winfrey and the OWN TV team in creating the largest spiritually empowering classroom on the planet! They inspire us, through conscious and empowering programming, to discover and use our individual light to illuminate the world.

It is just that type of collective wisdom and action that re-elected President Obama. And the precise type of action we pray our elected officials will adopt for the good of the country and the world. It’s the type of collective action found on social networks as well as in religious communities. And among families and friends and neighborhoods, especially in times of crisis like that currently being experienced on the east coast in the devastating wake of Hurricane Sandy and the Nor’easter passing over that same region as I type. In truth, as John Heywood so eloquently stated, “Many hands make light work.”

The same is true for many hearts and many souls. And because it is said, that thousands of candles can be lit from one without diminishing its flame, be sure to use your flame to be the light that changes the world.

Be well … & WISE!
